Vocabulary Revision / Practice – A Word Monster
Level: A1-A2
Aim: to introduce/revise various vocabulary items
Materials: Word Monster Poster, whiteboard, whiteboard magnets, whiteboard marker, flashcards
Procedure:
Word Monster Poster is put up on the whiteboard.
T tells the story about the word monster:
‘This is a Word Monster.
He eats words.
He is very hungry.
Let’s feed him.’
T introduces the chosen vocabulary items by showing the flashcard, pronouncing the word it represents, writing the word on the whiteboard next to the poster and putting the flashcard in the monster’s mouth.
Ss repeat the word, write it in their notebooks, and then write it on the board themselves.
After this step the flashcard travels from the monster’s mouth to its belly. This step signifies that the monster is no longer hungry and your students have learned the word.
The same procedure can be implemented when revising vocabulary. T tells the story, shows a flashcard, ss put their hands up if they know the word (or use some other appropriate gesture; I have introduced reception bells in my classroom for this specific purpose so my students ring the bell if they know the wordJ), they take the flashcard, put it in the monster’s mouth, write the word on the whiteboard and as the last step – and only if the spelling is correct – feed the monster by putting the flashcard into its belly.
