Halloween Costume Party

Level: A1-A2 Age: Young Learners

Aim: to practise have got, parts of the body, clothes and Halloween costumes

Materials: images of Halloween costumes, slips of paper, whiteboard marker, whiteboard


INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Introduce different Halloween costumes to your students. (1 per student. No duplicates!)

2. Write 3 descriptions for each costume on the board (see below; a big green nose, a pointy hat, a broom).

3. Write the names of costumes on slips of paper, put them in a (witch’s) hat and ask ss to draw one slip of paper. The costume written on the slip is now that student’s costume. Write a studentʼs name beside each costume on the board.

4. Students come to the board and try to memorize the description of the costume they got.

5. Students write the descriptions of their costumes on slips of paper. There should be three slips of paper for each costume.

6. Tell students to hand you back all of their slips of paper.

7. Mix up the slips of paper and hand out three slips to each student.

8. Students walk around the room and exchange slips of paper trying to put their assigned costume back together. Students should never have more than three slips of paper in their hands.
Model the conversation.

For Example:
Student A is looking for “Black cat” items; Student B is looking for “Witch” items.
Student A: Have you got a long tail?
Student B: No, I haven’t. Have you got a green pointy nose?
Student A: Oh, I have one (gives B paper). Have you got paws?
Student B: No, I haven’t. Sorry. I think Jackie has got whiskers. Go ask her. Sheʼs looking for a white sheet too. (gives A a slip of paper he doesnʼt need)

9. Students continue exchanging papers until they have a full costume. Students who finish first can help others “get dressed”. (In the meantime, erase the assigned costume names on the board.)

10. Stop the game when all students have a complete (or almost complete) costume. Play “What am I?”. Are all the costumes back together?
