Level: A1-lower A2

Age: young learners (7-9 years old)

Aim: to practise/revise food and drink vocabulary and Present Simple affirmative and negative sentences

Materials: a drawing of a monster, whiteboard markers, flashcards with different food items and a smiley or a sad face (white construction paper or power point cards), blue tack

A drawing of a monster is put up on the whiteboard. One thinking balloon is drawn next to the monster to the left and ‘Mmmmm… Delicious!’ is written at the top of it. One thinking balloon is drawn next to the monster to the right and ‘Grrrr… Yuck!’ is written at the top of it.

The teacher introduces the story and models students’ responses:

„This is Ben. He is very hungry and thirsty. We need to feed him, but he likes some food and he doesn’t like some food.“

The teacher takes two flashcards from two decks that are placed face down on the desk in front of the students and says:

„He likes oranges (the teacher holds up the card showing oranges with a happy face drawn on it) and he doesn’t like apples (the teacher holds up the card showing apples with a sad face drawn on it)„.

Students take one card from each deck and take turn to say what Ben likes and doesn’t like, stick the card in the appropriate balloon on the board and write their sentences on the whiteboard.
