Eating Habits – Then and Now

(Flipped Classroom Activity)

Level: B1-B2

Aim: to practise past simple, present simple and present perfect; expressing habits in the past (would and used to); food vocabulary; the use of language for suggesting/giving reasons; essay writing


step 1:

watch the video: 

 

step 2: 

write about all the things the young man’s grandpa did / used to do / would do and the things that the young man does in his life, e.g. My grandpa woke up at 7 a.m. and I wake up at 7, too. Write about all the activities shown in the commercial. Also, include the information about how things have changed

step 3:

make a list of all the dishes/food items that you see. Describe them in detail, e.g. a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. 

step 4: 

now you be the video’s director: imagine the video is made for viewers in ______________ (specify a country) and make a list of alternatives for every dish/food item, e.g. Instead of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich I would choose scrambled eggs and bacon and a glass of yogurt. Suggest as many food items as possible. Find pictures online that you can use to illustrate your choices. Also, suggest the background music and explain your choice. 

step 5:

write an essay (4 paragraphs: an  introduction, 2 main paragraphs and a conclusion) of 150 words on the topic Eating habits – then and now – changes for the better or for the worse?.
